How is meaning created?
We started today's lesson by listening to two very different pieces of music. Firstly we discussed denotation: what instruments could we hear? Then we discussed connotations, identifying the kinds of settings, characters and genres we might associate with the music we'd heard.
 |
 |
| |
This isn't an apple. It's a representation of an apple... |
 |
Secondly we started to discuss representation. Students paired up - one member of each pair watched a short video extract, and then described it to the other, who had to write it down. We'll examine the results next time! |

Homework: |
Complete the Representing You handout; bring it and the photographs to the next lesson.

What are cropping and anchorage?
Again while I was away, students learned about the way the meaning of an image can be manipulated, either by cropping it (removing parts of the image) or anchoring it with text (steering the way the audience will interpret the image through captions). |

|
Homework: |
Find a magazine advert with layers of meaning.
Stick it onto the middle of a piece of A3 paper.
Annotate the image, indicating denotation & connotation, and using media vocab. This homework sheet will provide you with useful guidance.
DUE: Friday September 29
Please also make sure your Britewhite toothpaste homework is ready to hand in. |

What is media language?
It was time to start looking at media key concepts today, beginning with media language. We started to look at how the meaning of signs are created for an audience, through colour, shape, body language and the audience's own expectations. We also identified the terms denotation (explicit meaning) and connotation (implicit meaning). |

Design your own logo for Britewhite toothpaste, and annotate it. See the homework sheet for more information - read it carefully.

What is Media Studies?
Having completed their media diaries, students revealed that the Internet and music would be the two media they would miss the most if they couldn't have them anymore. We went on to define the key concepts of media studies, and took a look at some magazine covers from the perspective of different audiences. |

Introducing Media Studies
For our second lesson we discussed how central the media is to our lives, and why it might therefore be important to study it, to avoid the trap of taking it for granted. We also took a look at the media questionnaire from another different angle, by each taking on a different persona and wondering, for example, which medium a pensioner couldn't live without. This introduced a key media concept: audience. |

|
Homework: |
- Read the What is the media? handout and glue it into your exercise book. There'll be a quiz on Thursday!
- Complete the media diary, logging your use of the media over a three day period.

Welcome to Media Studies
Today's lesson started a little slowly while we sorted out classrooms. However, we had fun with a getting to know you game (anyone who...), and distributed exercise books and folders.
Students completed a questionnaire assessing their own use of the media, and discussed what the word media actually means. We established that media is the plural of medium - that is, something in the middle.
The media (newspapers, television, the internet etc.) come between ideas or events and us - they are the channels through which audiences received communication. Here's an example of how it works. |
