GCSE: Newspapers - 2009 candidates

Here is a reminder to current Year 11 students on what they have to prepare for this coursework module.

Essay

Compare and contrast tabloid and broadsheet/compact newspapers through their coverage of a major news story.

Your essay MUST cover

  • Representation
  • Institution (the layout and content codes and conventions of tabloids and broadsheets/compacts)
  • You should also discuss newspaper audiences.
  • Make sure you discuss all aspects of these two types of newspapers, not just the front page leads.

Investigate Institution and Audience.

Use your newspaper glossary and the essay grid to help you.

Here are the newspaper front pages we looked at. We compared The Mirror and The Independent in class and I strongly advise you to use these in your essay.

Don't forget you can find out more about their readership at the Newspaper Marketing Association's page of facts and figures.

Front pages of The Sun: 'One of our Boys'   The Sun inside: Widow 6-7   The Daily Star front page: When Harry met Tali

The Daily Telegraph front page: Harry fighting the Taliban   The Daily Telegraph inside@ A soldier's story... on patrol   The Daily Mirror front page: My War by Prince Harry

The Daily Mail front page: Harry at War   The Daily Express front page: Harry the Secret Hero   The Times front page: This is about as normal as I'm going to get

The Independent front page: Failed!   The Guardian front page: army prepares to evacuate Harry

Practical

Create your own page from a Tabloid newspaper based on a celebrity scandal. This must be as close to industry standard as possible paying attention to layout, language and use of images.

Be sure to experiment with your use of cropping and anchorage to manipulate meaning.

Read the Newspapers coursework summary.

Assessment

Read the Section A mark scheme in student-friendly language.
